The short version

You can read every article here without giving us anything, because there is nowhere to type anything. We run no analytics, no newsletter and no comment database of our own. Two third parties are involved on these pages: Google AdSense, which serves the advertising, and GitHub, which hosts the comment threads. Their roles are described below.

What we collect directly

Nothing that identifies you. If you send us an email, then we hold the email you chose to send — that is the only personal data the forum ever holds about you, and it exists only as long as the conversation does.

Like nearly every website, the pages are served through a hosting network (Vercel) that keeps short-lived technical logs — IP address, user agent, requested URL — to resist abuse and keep the site up. We do not profile anyone from those logs.

Comments run on GitHub, not here

Comment threads are provided by giscus, which stores posts in the public GitHub Discussions of this project. If you comment, you do so under your GitHub identity, the comment is public, and GitHub's privacy policy and terms govern that interaction. We can moderate and remove comments in the Discussions repository, but we have no access to any account data behind them.

Language preference

The language switcher stores your choice in your browser's local storage so the site comes back in the language you picked. It is a preference, not a tracker; it never leaves your browser and you can clear it with your browser's "clear site data" control.

Advertising and Google cookies

This forum is supported by advertising, and the ads are served by Google AdSense. Because AdSense is the advertising system, the following disclosures apply to these pages:

Opting out does not remove advertising. It means the ads you see are not selected on the basis of your browsing history; contextual ads still appear. Google describes what it collects and why in How Google uses cookies and the Google Privacy Policy.

We do not sell advertising ourselves and we do not receive your browsing data from Google.

Consent where the law requires it

For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising cookies may only be set with prior consent. In those regions the personalization you receive depends on the choice you make in the consent message presented by Google's certified consent management platform, and declining it means ads are served without personalization.

Your rights

If you are in the EEA or the UK, you can ask for access to, or deletion of, any personal data we hold about you. Given what this site actually holds — at most, an email you sent us — such requests are quick to honour; write to the address on the contact page. If you are a California resident: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and you can opt out of Google's ad personalization through the links above at any time.

Children

This forum is written for people working in and around the compute industry. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK).

Changes to this policy

If the forum's data practices ever change — a newsletter, a first-party analytics tool, a comment system we host ourselves — this page will be updated to say so before the change goes live. The effective date at the top is the version marker.

Contact

Privacy questions, deletion requests and correction notices all go through the contact page.
